Tips and common uses
What to keep with your HRA claim
Keep the signed receipts, your rent agreement if you have one, and proof of payment such as bank statements or UPI records. Pay rent from your own account where you can, because a bank entry backs up the receipt.
Receipts for the whole year
Choose April as the first month and 12 months to get a full financial year in one PDF. Each page holds three receipts, so a year fits on four pages.
HRA works only in the old tax regime
The HRA exemption is not available in the new tax regime. Check which regime saves you more with our Income Tax Calculator before you bother your landlord for signatures.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need rent receipts to claim HRA?
Employers usually ask for rent receipts or a rent agreement when you declare HRA, and you should keep them in case of a tax query. The rules are set by your employer's declaration process, so check what yours asks for.
When is the landlord's PAN needed?
If the rent you pay is more than ₹1 lakh in a financial year, your employer needs the landlord's PAN. If the landlord has no PAN, they may need to give a declaration. Ask your employer's payroll team.
Does the landlord have to sign?
Yes, print the receipts and get them signed. A receipt the landlord has not signed is weak proof. If you pay in cash, some people also add a revenue stamp across the signature, so a box is available for it.
I pay rent every 3 or 6 months. What should I choose?
Enter the rent per month, then under "One receipt covers" choose 3 months (quarterly), 6 months (half-yearly) or 12 months (yearly). Each receipt then shows the total for its period, for example Rs. 60,000 for April 2026 to June 2026. Use a yearly receipt only if you really paid the whole year's rent at once.
Can I make receipts for a past month?
Choose the first month and the number of months. The receipt only shows the month the rent is for, so make it when the rent was actually paid and have it signed by the landlord at that time.
Is it fine to make my own receipts?
A receipt is a record of a payment that really happened. Only make receipts for rent you have actually paid, and keep bank statements or UPI records as extra proof. Wrong claims can lead to tax notices.
