How it works

Contrast ratio = (L1 + 0.05) ÷ (L2 + 0.05), where L1 and L2 are the relative luminance of the lighter and darker colour (WCAG 2). It ranges from 1:1 (same colour) to 21:1 (black on white).

Frequently asked questions

What ratio do I need?

At least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (about 24 px, or 19 px bold) to meet WCAG AA, which most laws and companies require.

What is the difference between AA and AAA?

AA is the standard level. AAA is stricter (7:1 for normal text) and is recommended for long reading and for people with low vision.

Does contrast matter for SEO?

Readable text keeps visitors on your page, and accessibility checks such as Lighthouse flag low contrast.
